Lakeside High School Throws 198,384 Balls with FungoMan

Lakeside High School Throws 198,384 Balls with FungoMan Sibley, LA – October 7, 2011 – Head Coach Bob Gray has been coaching in Northwest Louisiana for over 26 years. He has seen a lot of baseball both as a coach and as a father. However, it wasn’t until March of 2008, that he convinced the parents and boosters of his small community in Sibley, LA that they needed the FungoMan Automated Baseball Practice Machine. He was able to see the number of repetitions increase overnight. “I had the drills,” Gray said. “…and I knew what I wanted to accomplish. Now I had a tool that would help me accomplish more during the same amount of time.” The Lakeside High School FungoMan Automated Baseball Practice Machine has thrown over 198,000 baseballs (198,384 to be precise, according to the counter on the FungoMan wireless device). Although there is some wear on the original set of tires, Gray is proud to say that he has never had to change them. When Coach Gray was asked why his machine had so many balls thrown, he simply replied, “We use it…Everyday!” When asked how he uses FungoMan, he quipped, “any way we can think of! Fly balls, ground balls, catcher popups, bunting practice, curve balls to hitters, timing drills for hitters…do you want me to keep going?” Known for getting the most out of his players, Gray has taken his teams to the playoffs in every season except two (24 of 26 years). He has had 11 State Semi-Finalists, 1 State Runner-Up, and 2 State Championships (1990 and 1991). The Lakeside Warriors completed the...

Student of the Game

Freshman Angelo LaBruna leads all ACC shortstops with a .988 fielding percentage. By JOHN ROTH GoDuke The Magazine, April 2011 As an alumnus with a rich background in the professional ranks, Duke baseball coach Sean McNally embraces player development as one of the essential avenues to building a better Blue Devil program. It is an especially significant tenet this year with a roster that includes 15 freshmen, four or five of whom start on a regular basis. McNally and his staff utilize numerous tools to help groom their players’ talents, and two new ones came on board this season — the artificial resurfacing of Jack Coombs Field to create an excellent on-campus training facility, and the addition of a FungoMan, an automated practice machine. The FungoMan can rifle a slew of realistic ground balls at rapid intervals to players who want extra work on their defense. Infielders in particular make use of the device to practice fielding grounders after team workouts or on their own time — and nobody has used the machine more than freshman shortstop Angelo LaBruna. With veteran shortstop Jake Lemmerman’s departure to the pros following the 2010 campaign, McNally entered this year with a vacancy in the heart of his infield. He considered moving ACC rookie of the year Marcus Stroman over from second base but thought it best not to increase the strain on Stroman’s arm since he is also a key pitcher for the Blue Devils. LaBruna made it a moot point when he arrived from his native California and earned the position during fall practice. He has started every game this spring...

Bridgewater-Raritan HS Credits FungoMan as Part of 2010 Success

The Bridgewater-Raritan High School Baseball Program in Bridgewater, NJ is coming off the most successful season in program history.  In 2010, the Panthers won the school’s first State Sectional Title.  The summer team followed that championship up with an AABC 17u New Jersey State Title and a trip to Albuquerque, NM for nationals. B-R purchased the FungoMan in December 2010 in conjunction with Bridgewater Baseball, the local youth baseball organization.  The FungoMan quickly became an instrumental part of the Panthers’ practice and pregame routines. “There is no doubt that the FungoMan was instrumental in our success as a program last year.  We have great kids, who want to work hard and get better, and with the FungoMan, we are able to give them significantly more repetitions throughout the season.” Newill specifically credits the FungoMan for the team’s tremendous outfield play.  “Our outfielders ran down everything last year.  The FungoMan really helped them learn how to turn and run on the ball.  Being able to fire balls deep in the gaps and down the lines really simulates what our outfielders face in game situations.” In addition to the use the FungoMan gets with the high school program, Bridgewater Baseball, the local youth baseball organization, is also using at its indoor winter clinics.  Brian Schnepf, the director of youth clinics for Bridgewater Baseball says, “I think the greatest thing about the Fungoman, besides the increased repetitions, is the ability to be out in the field with the kids, instructing them, as opposed to behind home plate hitting the fungoes.” With the snow and cold weather that has blanketed the New Jersey...
